Småland bistro chair

When past meets present

In the mid-1960s, renowned Swedish designer Yngve Ekström created Småland, a relaxed yet distinctive bistro chair. The timing was right – before long, Småland could be found in cafés, restaurants and hotels across Sweden. The chair captured a longing for lightness, colour and optimism about the future. That longing remains today – and now Småland is back. Still made in Småland, Sweden, by its original manufacturer, Stolab.

“The success of Småland back then had a lot to do with its form – it felt both new and familiar at the same time. It is effortlessly cool yet full of optimism. The back leans slightly backwards, while the legs angle forward, giving it a sense of movement. The wooden construction is solid and sturdy, yet the expression is almost musical. A bit like a jazz piece by Jan Johansson. And all of this feels just as relevant today, making the timing for a relaunch perfect.”

Martin Johansson, CEO and owner of Stolab

“I would never ask a man if he knows what he’s getting into. I would just say, you don’t know what you’re getting into. Just make your mind up, please. I love you."
