Kunskapshuset Gällivare

Here, culture and history are reflected in a modern context.

In Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, lies Gällivare. A city constantly evolving and enriched with Kunskaphuset - a multi-award-winning building that houses the local high school and adult education programs. The proximity to the mountain world and Sami culture is reflected in the colors, patterns, and integrated art. It's an environment where our Pinnockio Windsor chair fits seamlessly.

"An arctic small town of world-class." That was Gällivare municipality's vision for the city. It was also an important part of the task given to Liljewall Arkitekter and MAF arkitektkontor when they were designing kunskapshuset. The goal was to create a flexible and beautiful educational environment prepared for future needs of change and development. The result was a vibrant building where the interior follows the same concept as the exterior architecture. Jonas Hermansson, architect at Liljewall Arkitekter "When choosing materials and furnishings, it was important to create a functional and inspiring working environment for both students and staff. The interior design was also developed to enhance and highlight the qualities of the building." "Nature, culture, history, and craftsmanship have been guiding principles as we 'crafted' the ideas. The surrounding marshes, for example, inspired the dominant red color. It's a color that stands out but also blends well with the surroundings and the neighboring buildings." The red color is also repeated internally, accompanied by calm gray tones with black details in fittings and columns.

Classic windsore chair a natural choice

"When we were choosing a chair for the dining hall, we were looking for a classic windsore chair. A chair that signifies tradition, craftsmanship, and timelessness. We chose Stolab's Pinnockio, designed by Yngve Ekström. The chair's design and history fit well into our overall concept. High quality at a reasonable price has also been of great importance in such an extensive project. We chose a black color for the chairs in the dining hall to match the other interior details. There are also several natural-colored Pinnockio chairs placed in different locations throughout the building."

Adaptations for higher functionality

"We have had close collaboration with Stolab, and they have been very accommodating and fulfilled our requests for adaptations. They were involved in developing a fitting that could be attached under the tables to hang the chairs, which is an important function when dealing with 400 chairs in a dining hall that need to be cleaned every day. We also modified the feet of the chairs to create an even quieter environment." Input Interiör in Luleå has been responsible for the delivery, installation, and logistics for the majority of the interior of the Knowledge House.

Håkan Lagerlöf, Site Manager at Input Interiör in Luleå "It's a historically important project for the entire Gällivare municipality, and we at Input Interiör are proud to have been a part of it. We have been a unifying link between the municipality, construction, and architect throughout the project. A significant challenge was that much of the work had to be done during the pandemic. It has been a couple of years since we completed the project, and everything has worked out very well. Stolab's Pinnockio is both aesthetically appealing and functional in this fairly tough environment of a school dining hall. The proximity to their own manufacturing allows us as customers to influence certain customizations, which are often required for practicality and functionality in public spaces."
